Joemar Clemente
Winter 2010 Senator
jnclemente@ucdavis.edu
Office Hours:
T/Th, 12pm-2pm @ the Cross Cultural Center
I’m Joemar Clemente, a fourth year Political Science and Science & Technology Studies double major, minoring in Asian American Studies. Last quarter I ran with LEAD, but this quarter I’m running as an independent. Most people who run and lose tend to walk away from the association all together, but I refuse to walk away because I am determined to serve our campus community on the Senate table.
I currently serve as one of the ranking members-at-large for the Academic Affairs Commission. I drafted legislation supporting the library and helped craft the new General Education requirements and attended numerous programs and conferences that discuss issues facing members of our campus communities.
As a student Senator:
I want to advocate on behalf of our resource centers. Next year, the resources centers: the Learning Skills Center (LSC), the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center(LGBTRC), the Cross Cultural Center (CCC), and the Women's Resources & Research Center (WRRC) face deep budget cuts that directly impact students. More senators must fight for these centers because these centers help a great deal with UC Davis’ retention efforts and provide much needed services to students.
I also want to advocate the administration to increase funding to Shields Library, which has been operating under a stagnant budget for 15 years. This chronic underfunding is adversely impacting students, be it the quality and quantity of printed resources, fewer librarians, and shorter library hours.
Revive the Science & Engineering Committee and pave their path towards a full Commission. The science and engineering community has been disproportionately represented in ASUCD. Part of this disconnect is that most science & engineering students don’t feel like they have a place in ASUCD. This committee failed because it was not taken seriously—they don’t even have a webpage on the ASUCD website. Let us make the Science & Engineering Committee a full commission and ensure their voice is heard on the Senate table!
