There are several undergraduate teaching awards for professors, but the ASUCD Excellence in Education Awards are the ONLY awards that are nominated, funded, and selected exclusively by students like you.

Tell your state legislators about the economic importance of the University of California and the need for reinvestment in higher education! The University of California has suffered from annual budget cuts and increasing student fees. On March 6th, 2012 ASUCD and Chancellor Katehi hosted the California Jobs Summit at UC Davis. Business, government, and higher education leaders joined UC Davis students in a collaborative student led conference on issues of jobs and the challenging economic climate. SACTO CEO Barbara Hayes served as the emcee of the event, followed by joint welcome remarks from Chancellor Katehi and ASUCD President Adam Thongsavat. California State Senator Lois Wolk, Assemblymember Mariko Yamada, and Next Economy’s Martha Lofgren opened with keynote speeches.

After, regional leaders including Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor, Vice Chancellor Fred Wood, SARTA CEO Meg Arnold, Aamigoo Operations Director Molly Fluet, Professor and UC Davis 2020 Initiative Advisor Ken Burtis, UCSA Executive Director Matt Haney, and State Senator Lois Wolk led joint breakout sessions of students and professionals with focus on problems and solutions to the state of the economy.

Concluding the day’s event was a panel discussion where audience members asked questions and in turn helped produce candid discussion on how to foster economic growth and job creation. The California Jobs Summit at UC Davis was unprecedented as a student initiated and lead policy conference. Over 350 attendees participated in the state wide summit, which included a host of business, government, and higher education leaders.

This event will not only convene business leaders and elected officials, but will also allow for student involvement through key note speakers, an interactive breakout session, and panel discussions. This is a great opportunity to connect with California state representatives, business leaders, and various other influential figures from our state.

To attend, students can fill out the application form found at http://asucd.ucdavis.edu/california-jobs-summit-2012 between February 15-23, 2012. 200 students will be selected at random to attend the event. Participants will be notified on February 24, 2012.

UC General Counsel Charles Robinson and UC Berkeley School of Law Dean Christopher Edley, Jr. are calling on all students, staff and faculty to share their opinions and experiences on systemwide police policies and procedures, and to identify best practices in connection with protests on the UC Davis campus.

UC Davis Graduate Student Association Chair Katheryn Kolesar and ASUCD President Adam Thongsavat will serve as co-hosts for
the event.

Last November, President Mark G. Yudof appointed Robinson and Edley to lead a systemwide examination to review current policies and identify best practices in connection with protests at all 10 UC campuses.

As part of their effort, Robinson and Edley are on a listening tour. They hosted their first town hall Jan. 31 at UC Berkeley. Following the Feb. 10 event here, the final town hall is scheduled for Feb. 28 at UC Irvine.

The comments that Robinson, Edley and their review team gather at the town hall meetings will help inform a broad examination of the best practices that universities across the country have implemented to balance campus safety and security with the rights to assemble, demonstrate and engage in civil disobedience.

Following their review of UC policies, the town hall meetings and consultations with experts within and outside UC, Robinson and Edley expect to post a draft set of recommendations for comment. The team expects to forward its recommendations to Yudof in early March.
